Toothbrushes play a very important role in your oral health, but these valuable tools are often taken for granted. Too many medicine cabinets contain brushes that are frayed and worn out. Unfortunately, if your toothbrush isn't in good shape, your dental health may suffer. Dr. Cesar Acosta, your Turlock, CA, dentist discusses when you should buy a new toothbrush.
Signs it's time to buy a new toothbrush
Make a trip to the dental health aisle of the nearest drug or grocery store if:
- You can't remember the last time you replaced your toothbrush. Ideally, toothbrushes should be replaced every three to four months. Add a reminder to your paper or online calendar to ensure that you don't forget to change your toothbrush.
- Your toothbrush bristles are frayed. If your toothbrush looks like someone sat on it, it's time for a new brush. Frayed brushes are less effective at cleaning your teeth and can damage your sensitive gums.
- You've been sick. Germs can linger in your toothbrush long after your recover from a cold, the flu or another virus. Get into the habit of buying a new brush every time you're sick. If your entire family stores their toothbrushes in one holder, germs can spread easily from one brush to another. It's a good idea to replace everyone's brush if one person has been ill.
- Something bad happened to your toothbrush. No matter what the situation, if something bad has happened to your toothbrush, it's best to replace it. You can try to disinfect it, but since toothbrushes are inexpensive, it's much easier just to toss the contaminated brush in the trash can.
Daily brushing, in addition to regular dental exams, is essential to your oral health. If it's time for your next exam, call Dr. Cesar Acosta, your Turlock, CA, dentist at (209) 250-2560 to schedule an appointment.
